By Cambria CopelandPublished: May, 2007

San Francisco, known for its peninsular location, is a perfect vacation destination for families. Its unique combination of colorful attractions, world-famous landmarks and ethnic neighborhoods make it an authentic amusement park for children (and parents) of all ages. Just a 90-minute flight, or an eight-hour road trip from Southern California, it is extremely accessible for quick weekend getaways.

If planned well, San Francisco’s surprisingly kid-friendly atmosphere will easily become your family’s favorite destination. There are several sites and attractions unique to San Francisco that should be on every visitor’s list of must-sees. Because the sightseeing opportunities are so diverse, planning is key. Take time to research tour and travel options to ensure your family’s vacation is well-rounded, full, and, most importantly, fun!

Chinatown
Considered the largest Chinatown outside of Asia, this cultural neighborhood is sure to be a family favorite. Entering the gateway on Grant and Bush Streets will transport you to a land far away. This historic area is home to 24 blocks of authentic restaurants, interesting shops, food markets, temples and museums. The streets are lined with stone lions, dragon-twined lampposts, pagoda roofs and brightly- colored lanterns. Don’t miss the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory at 56 Ross Alley and watch the pros assemble fortune cookies. Note: Parking is especially difficult in this neighborhood, so plan on paying for parking or taking public transit into the area. Information: sanfranciscochinatown.com

Exploratorium
Science is never boring at this innovative hands-on museum, located within the walls of the historic Palace of Fine Arts with a glorious view of the majestic Golden Gate Bridge. With more than 650 exhibits, the Exploratorium is sure to spark curiosity in visitors young and old. Explore the secrets of heat, light, electricity, color, tornados and so much more in an environment that encourages visitors to touch, experiment and create. Information: exploratorium.edu

Fisherman’s Wharf
Fisherman’s Wharf is considered San Francisco’s most famous tourist attraction. Known for its historic waterfront and spectacular views, families can browse in souvenir shops, take a boat ride through the bay, enjoy some clam chowder, visit Ghiradelli Chocolate Square and the Maritime Museum, among many other things. Be sure to take your family to Musee Mechanique antique arcade, located at Pier 45. With more than 300 antique gadgets to choose from, your family can chuckle with Laughing Sal, have their fortunes told, play old arcade games and enjoy listening to antique music boxes. Golden Gate Park
Golden Gate Park is considered one of the most breathtaking, family-friendly parks this side of the Rockies. This 1,017-acre park spans nearly three miles, stretching from the Pacific Ocean to Stanyan Avenue near the Haight District, and is populated with huge stands of eucalyptus, pine and cypress trees, numerous museums and even a herd of buffalo. Families can take a spin on the beautifully restored carousel, visit the Botanical Gardens, feed the ducks at one of the many lakes, go boating at Stow Lake, hike, visit the De Young Museum, rollerblade and ride bikes, just to name a few activities. At the nearby Japanese Tea Garden, families can enjoy tea and fortune cookies for a small fee. Information: nps.gov.goga/

San Francisco Zoo
Located in the Sunset District near the southern border of the city, the San Francisco Zoo is considered the largest zoological park in Northern California and one of the top city zoos in the United States. Golden Gate Bridge
When most people think of San Francisco, they immediately think of the Golden Gate Bridge. Considered one of the seven manmade wonders of the world, the Golden Gate Bridge is a must-see, especially for the first-time visitor. Driving under its majestic crimson hue towers is awe-inspiring. Walking or biking across the 1.7-mile bridge is sure to wow even its youngest visitors. It’s an unforgettable experience!
