WEB EXTRA: Get another dose of love

By Kristen SchottPublished: February, 2010

‘The Bog Baby’ [ages 3-7]
By Jeanne Willis; illustrated by Gwen Millward (Schwartz & Wade; $16.99; 32 pages)

Two little girls find a Bog Baby in a magical pond and decide to keep him. But when he grows ill, they must do the only thing that will make their much-loved pet better. The age-old moral, “if you love something, let it go,” is brought to life in this beautifully illustrated and written book. This is a classic that belongs in your child’s library and in his or her heart forever.

‘Wilson and Miss Lovely’ [ages 4-8]
By John Stadler (Robin Corey Books; $9.99; 32 pages)

Wilson is a different kind of student. His favorite part of school isn’t recess or math or reading – he’s got a sweet spot for his new teacher, Miss Lovely. Tagged as a “back-to-school mystery,” this clever lift-the-flap tale offers humor, adventure and a witty surprise that kiddies will enjoy. They may even love Miss Lovely, too.

‘Paulie Pastrami Achieves World Peace’ [ages 4-8]

By James Proimos (Little, Brown & Co.; $15.99; 40 pages)

Paulie Pastrami makes a goal to achieve world peace, and he is only 7 when he does it. But how does someone so young bring harmony to the whole world? Through, compassion, kindness – and a few cupcakes, of course. This humorous selection teaches children that with just a few small acts of love, a world of a difference can be made.

‘Getting to Know Ruben Plotnick’ [ages 5-9]
By Roz Rosenbluth; illustrated by Maurie Manning (Flashlight Press; $15.95; 32 pages)

Ruben Plotnick is “the coolest kid in class,” and David, the book’s narrator, is overjoyed when they decide to do homework at his house. But David’s also a bit nervous at how Ruben will react to his grandmother’s behavior. The book broaches the difficult subject of old age and some of the conditions associated with it, and it teaches children to look past the surface to really get to know someone.
