Legoland visit

The park of choice for many very young children

By Kerri MabeePublished: June, 2005

Think of a day spent with the kids at an amusement park and you’re probably imagining winding lines, aching feet and not an empty bench in sight. But, if you’re headed to San Diego County and to LEGOLAND, that scenario couldn’t be further from the truth. Satisfied pass-holders will tell you if you want safe, clean and comfortable family fun, LEGOLAND is an excellent choice.

Nestled among the strawberry patches and flower fields of Carlsbad just off the 805 freeway, LEGOLAND is a place where kid-powered creativity reigns as parents rest easy. In fact, there are lots of “mother”-minded details that will make your visit a pleasurable one optional family restrooms, lots of shaded seating, safely-enclosed play areas, wholesome shows and non-threatening rides are just the beginning. Even the community bins of LEGO bricks at The Imagination Zone are sanitized daily to ensure cleanliness.

LEGOLAND California opened in 1999 but the design planning stages began in 1995 and ground broke in 1997. Spokeswoman Betsy Sanchez notes that the park “offers a full day of interactive attractions, family rides, shows, restaurants, shopping and beautiful landscape features specially geared for children ages 2-12 and their families.” The following attractions are just a hint of what you’ll find there.

Need for Speed

At Fun Town, there are trains, planes and automobiles for all those little speed racers looking for some fun. Kids can earn their driver’s license on a true-to-life highway, complete with road signs and traffic lights. Or they can navigate the choppy seas on miniature power boats. And helicopters and airplanes will have them riding high.

A Blast to the Past

Kids will have a royal good time at the Knight’s Kingdom. They can joust on fine horses and take a wild ride on the Dragon Coaster. The Hideways is a multi-level fort filled with ropes for climbing and enchanted entryways to explore. On Memorial Day 2005, LEGOLAND California introduces Knights’ Tournament, a daring new attraction that allows guests to become knights-in-training as they cross a medieval moat, select the intensity of their ride experience and embark on a one-of-a-kind adventure aboard one of six passenger-carrying robotic arms.

The Crown Jewel

What would LEGOLAND be without the awesome imaginations of brick builders, both young and old? Miniland is a must-see spot for LEGO enthusiasts who would appreciate a “world” full of LEGO bricks. Set in the heart of the park, you’ll find amazing miniature recreations of Washington D.C., Mount Rushmore, downtown New Orleans and more. Guests now can catch a glimpse of the Freedom Tower years before the actual one is completed.

Sanchez promises that “the LEGO experience is playing, learning, interacting, exploring, expressing, discovering, creating and imagining all with a heavy dose of fun.”

It took 100 model builders in England and Denmark three years to complete the 5,000 models that are now in the park. One day of fun is all it takes.
