Four tips to create a more youthful you

by angela bishopPublished: September, 2010

Plastic surgery is a popular way to fix those little flaws we all have. Even though it's a widely accepted way to take care of some imperfections, it is not without risk and is often expensive. More innovations are being developed all the time, but you might first consider these tips before going under the knife or the needle:

• Get creative with makeup – Did you know you could actually change the way your face looks with makeup? From fuller lips and a thinner nose to higher cheekbones, all you need is the right tools. Not sure how? There are many tutorials online to help you get started.

• Exercise – Find a good personal trainer and find out how to target your problem areas. With some hard work, you can have the body you’ve always wanted. Yoga and Pilates are great ways to tone your body and help you look years younger.

• Eat healthy fats – While many fatty foods are bad for you, healthy fats are important to your body. Things like walnuts, olive and safflower oil, flax, avocados and oily fish help keep your skin hydrated, which leads to less sagging and wrinkles. These foods are high in calories, so just make sure not to overdo it.

• Take care of your skin from the outside – Moisturize your entire body every day. Use a skin brush over your less-firm areas daily before showering. Use a body scrub in the shower to increase blood and lymph flow to the area, significantly decreasing cellulite.

These tips will not give you instant results, but they can pay off in the long run. You may see a reduction in wrinkles and other flaws, while feeling fresh and invigorated.

•> MOM’S GIVEAWAY: WARM MEMORIES
Do you have a bin full of T-shirts or favorite clothes you just can't seem to part with? Most of us have baby items, uniforms and concert jerseys that we hang onto, even though they’re not being worn.  But parting with them is like throwing out a cherished piece of the past.

The answer: ShirtQuilts.com. Your favorite items will be assembled to create a one-of-a-kind quilt, so you can wrap yourself in the comfort of treasured memories. Go HERE to win a gift certificate for a standard custom quilt (a $175 value), go to ocfamily.com and click on Mom’s Day Off.

Congratulations to last month’s winner: Gina Ferguson of Corona.

•> BIRTH CONTROL BREAKTHROUGHS
What are the latest methods?
By Sanaz Majd, M.D.

Birth control options have evolved since the creation of “the pill” 50 years ago. These days, women have safer and more effective options. Here are some of the latest products (all have an effectiveness rating of about 99 percent):

Nuvaring
Released in 2001, Nuvaring is a circular, plastic vaginal ring that is left in for three weeks, then removed, so the menstrual cycle can resume. After one week, a new one is inserted. The hormones are released directly into the vaginal tissue and not taken orally, as with the pill.

Implanon
One of the newer, more advanced methods, Implanon is a small single-rod implant that releases a progesterone-only hormone. It is inserted into the skin under the upper/inner arm by a physician. Implanon lasts three years and is highly effective.

Essure
Developed in 2001, Essure is an in-office sterilization procedure in which a flexible device is inserted into the fallopian tubes through the cervix. There are no abdominal incisions or general anesthesia. Compared to traditional tubal ligation, which is performed in the hospital under general anesthesia, Essure has fewer complications, less recovery time and reduced discomfort.

No single method is 100 percent effective, but there are options for almost every woman. Talk to your doctor about medical history, age, periods, medications, breastfeeding and the length of time you wish to prevent pregnancy, among other things. Discuss your options openly and by all means, be safe!

Dr. Sanaz Majd is a family practitioner based in Riverside and Santa Ana.
