Getting started

It is estimated that between 6 and 12 million children older than 3 suffer from head lice each year.

By Michele PiazzoniPublished: June, 2007

- A novel treatment concept has experts wondering if the best way to deal with these pests isn't simply by turning up the heat. That's right, an unconfirmed study reported a 96% success rate when an infected scalp was treated with a leave-in lotion, dried with a hair dryer, and then removed the next day. The process appears to suffocate the lice, although more research is still needed.

 - Reading to your child from a very young age certainly promotes early literacy, but don't be fooled into thinking that electronic books can do the job for you. In fact, a joint study conducted by Temple University's Infant Lab and the Erikson Institute in Chicago found that electronic books were simply not as effective in promoting literacy. Researchers described an electronic reading experience as "truncated" and parent-child interaction during this type of reading, as "coercive."

 - The pros and cons of long-term childcare are being debated again following a study conducted by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. For more about this subject, please read Family News in this issue.
