Super Bowl Primer

Films to consider before the big game

By Inland Empire FamilyPublished: January, 2005

Kick off the Super Bowl festivities this year by watching some football favorites, and also prepare for an informal spread that will delight your family and invited friends. First, here’s a list of Super Bowl primers, chosen by Suncoast Motion Picture Company and OC Family Magazine. We’ve added age lists to those films that are reserved for the older crowd:

“Friday Night Lights” (2004)

Based on a book and a true story, a small Texas town embraces its football team in a quest for nothing less than the state title. The pressures felt by the teens and their families are enormous and familiar. Stay tuned to the ending credits that explain the route in life that some of the players took after the final whistle. (For ages 12 and older)

“Radio” (2003)

Cuba Gooding Jr. stars as real-life Robert “Radio” Kennedy, who inspires a football team and an entire town. (For ages 7 and older)

“Remember the Titans” (2000)

A true story of a newly appointed African-American coach, played by Denzel Washington, and his high school team on their first season as a racially integrated unit in Virginia. The movie shows how a sport can bring a community together, as well as keep it apart. (For ages 10 and older)

“Brian’s Song” (1971)

The poignant classic about Gayle Sayers and Brian Piccolo of the Chicago Bears. This one will leave even the gruffest members of your family a little misty. The made-for-TV movie was so good, it played for a while in theaters. (For ages 7 and older)

“Horse Feathers” (1932)

This Marx Brothers comedy pokes fun at higher education and college football and is as funny today as it was so many years ago. (For the whole family)

“Rudy” (1993)

The inspirational true story about an undersized underdog who dared to dream about playing football for Notre Dame. (For ages 10 and older)

“North Dallas Forty” (1979)

Nick Nolte and Mac Davis star in this account of the seedy side of pro football. Nolte plays a gruff and cynical tight end addicted to painkillers. (Adults only)

“The Waterboy” (1998)

The goofball antics of Adam Sandler will leave your kids in stitches. (For teens and older)

“Jerry Maguire” (1996)

The movie starring Tom Cruise that introduced the world to the phrase, “Show me the money!” (For adults only)

“The Program” (1993)

James Caan stars as the college football coach of a fictional team, the ESU Timberwolves. This movie provides an inside look at the intricacies of college football. (For adults only)

“The Longest Yard”(1974)

Burt Reynolds is a former football player sent to prison for stealing his ex-girlfriend’s sports car. The warden is a football fan who forces Reynolds to organize a team of inmates to play against the guards. (For adults only)

“Any Given Sunday” (1999)

Oliver Stone’s grim look at professional football and the relationships between owners, players, coaches and fans. (For adults only; a particularly rough film)

Now to the food
A Super Bowl party doesn’t have to be a chips and beer-fest. Karen Brown offers the following ideas for a smashing Super Bowl dinner party from her book, “The Dinner Party Cookbook.”

• Ask guests to dress in the colors of their favorite team.

• Decorate with pennants, pom-poms, and toy footballs.

• Serve food and beverages as a buffet, or assemble box lunches that guests can balance on their laps during the game.

• For a centerpiece, use a real football surrounded by mums, ribbons, and miniature football figures.

• Get things started by organizing a pool with low-dollar bets.

By the way, Super Bowl XXXIX will be Feb. 6 in Jacksonville, Fla.m
