At least he gets an arsenal of cool gadgets and a supporting cast led by Ewan McGregor, Mickey Rourke and Alicia Silverstone. The family spy thriller is based on a young adult adventure series of books by Anthony Horowitz. [For ages 9 and older] TIM BURTON’S THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS 3-D Opens Oct. 20 Rated PG Tim Burton showed us in 1993 how to get into the holiday spirit with spirits by combining Christmas and Halloween in a single movie. This month we get to experience déjà vu at the movies, only this time not at just any theater. In a limited release, the ghoulish story of a skeleton’s hope to bring Christmas cheer to his undead pals of Halloweentown will be told – or rather shown – in 3-D. As your eyes dazzle while wearing those stupid glasses, your ears will hear an excellent voice cast led by Chris Sarandon, Danny Elfman, Catherine O’Hara and William Hickey. Warning to parents: Though rated PG, the movie might be too scary for younger children due to some of the creepy creatures and an abduction of Santa Claus. [dvds] this month Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (Rated PG, available Oct. 10, for ages 5-10): Improving on the modest 2004 hit, the combo live action-computer-animated sequel has Garfield following his owner, Jon, to England. The plump pussycat, again voiced by Bill Murray, is mistaken for another of royal descent, which has inherited a castle.Grade: B Over the Hedge (Rated PG, available Oct. 17, for ages 5-12): Nature friends unite when a suburban housing development encroaches on their woodland homes. Based on the critter-riddled comic strip, the computer-animated feature delivers a strong voice cast, but not enough laughs. Making the most of a so-so script are Bruce Willis, Steve Carell and Garry Shandling as a mischievous raccoon, hyperactive squirrel and sensitive turtle, respectively. Grade: C+ The Little Mermaid (Rated G, available Oct. 3, for ages 4-10): An all-new “Kiss the Girl” music video performed by Ashley Tisdale, previously unveiled deleted scenes and a virtual ride on a cyber-attraction inspired by the 1989 movie are among the bonuses of a 2-disc “special edition” re-release of “The Little Mermaid.” Digitally re-mastered, the mermaid Ariel dreams of life beyond the sea. Grade: A |
