GO, MATH GIRL!
UC Riverside has received a $482,000 federal grant to create a program highlighting the importance of mathematics-based careers for middle-school girls and ensuring they develop the skills to achieve such goals.

The funding will also support efforts to increase the number of female mathematics majors who pursue teaching as a career.

The goal of Isis, the two-year U.S. Department of Education grant to the ALPHA Center at UCR, is to target middle-school girls at low-performing schools, and undergraduate female students at UCR, for participation in a yearlong program to provide guidance to excel in high school and college mathematics while stressing the options available for young women in mathematics-based careers.

Some 250 middle-school girls will receive instruction, tutoring and mentoring from middle-school teachers, with undergraduate students and faculty members from UCR.
