STYLE AND A GOOD CAUSE

An Eddie Bauer store is preparing to join the roster of retailers at Victoria Gardens in Rancho Cucamonga in time for the 2005 holiday season. Eddie Bauer specializes in outdoor and casual apparel and accessories for men and women. The company also is a contributor to the cause of reforesting America, partnering with American Forestsä for its Eddie Bauer Global ReLeaf project, called “Add a Dollar, Plant a Tree.” Whenever a customer “adds a dollar” to a purchase, Eddie Bauer “plants a tree” in North America in areas that have been devastated by natural disasters. The project has helped plant more than 4.4 million trees over the last four years. Customers can participate in “Add a Dollar, Plant a Tree” at any Eddie Bauer store, through its catalogs, or online at www.eddiebauer.com. The open-air Victoria Gardens shopping center is located at the northwest corner of I-15 and Foothill Boulevard in Rancho Cucamonga.

ART TILE EXHIBIT

The American Museum of Ceramic Art in Pomona is presenting “Laying the Foundation: American Art Tile” through Nov. 5. The exhibit examines the evolution of tile manufacturing during the last century as the trade made its way from the East Coast to the West, and also provides a sample of what contemporary artists are producing amid the current resurgence of tile use. Recent interest in the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as its Spanish influence, has prompted a revival of tile making, with an emphasis on replicating those styles popular in the 1920s. The American Museum of Ceramic Art is located at 340 S. Garey Ave. in Pomona and is open from noon-5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Information, call 909.865.3146 or visit www.ceramicmuseum.org.

SUPER MOM MAKING SUPER ACIDS

Amy Avelar, who graduated from UC Riverside this past spring, has three sons, a knack for making new molecules, and a highly competitive 2005 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship worth $90,000 over three years. As an NSF Graduate Research Scholar, Avelar will pursue her Ph.D. at UCR, conducting research in carborane acids, known as “superacids” for their strength. They hold great promise in improving the quality and octane rating for gasoline, developing polymers and synthesizing pharmaceuticals. At 25, Avelar manages her research with family life, which includes husband Alvaro and their three boys, ages 8, 3, and 1. “My mother-in-law watches the children while I am at school,” she says. Avelar plans on pursuing her Ph.D. in chemistry and finding a job as a researcher in the chemical industry or as a college professor.
