![]() In addition, Kaela participated in dance and acting programs at Dorothy McElhinney Middle School, a performing arts magnet school in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. She performed in school plays, did a broadcast on campus and was in the dance group. Now this active 15-year-old is jumping into the music scene. Over the summer, Kaela released her first single, “What Yo Name Is?” an upbeat pop/hip-hop tune written and produced by Kaela’s 17-year-old brother, who goes by the nickname CLIP. Kaela has been distributing a CD with her single nationwide to radio stations, music producers, bloggers, websites and fans in the hopes of building a following among pop and hip-hop music lovers. Q: How did you come up with the idea or concept for your song? A: I was driving home from church with friends when I thought of this saying I’d heard. I later asked my brother to help put the idea to music, and we were in the studio recording the song the next day. He produced the beat and wrote the lyrics. Q: How did you get your song produced? A: My brother is really into music, so my parents built a recording studio for him at our house. The original version of the song was created in our studio, and once we had it perfect, we took it to a larger studio and recorded it again. I’m also working with a label called Sickman Records. Another song I recorded with my brother is called “Why Should We Bother?” Q: How are you getting yourself, your name and your music out there? A: I have a website, kaelafreeman.com, and I’m active on Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. I’m also on YouTube; my channel name is kaelafreeman. I’m getting a lot of fans from the Web by going “viral,” and of course by word of mouth from my friends. My family helps a lot, too. Something else that was really fun and exciting is I shot my first music video for “What Yo Name Is?” over the summer. The video was shot at a warehouse in Los Angeles with a cast of more than 50 dancers and actors from Murrieta, Temecula and L.A. I’m hoping the song will get some radio play and attention, and that the video will help me. Q: Where can our readers hear your songs? A: “What Yo Name Is?” can be heard on sickmanrecords.com, at myspace.com/kaelafreeman and kaelafreeman.com. By the time this goes to print, it should be on Amazon.com, iTunes and more than 20 other digital stores. Q: What are you plans this fall? A: Hopefully I’ll get to travel a little and meet some of my new fans face to face. That would be a lot of fun, and I enjoy performing too, so maybe I’ll get to do a few shows. I already go to Los Angeles a lot, so I will continue to work on commercials and other projects. It’s hard to keep a regular school schedule, so this year I’m going to be home-schooled so I can pursue my music and acting, and work on promoting “What Yo Name Is?” as well as one or two other songs my brother is producing for me. We thought I’d try home-schooling for a year. Eventually I’d like to study law in college while pursuing music and acting, too.
