Desk-side chat with OC’s Jan Domene, PTA National President, 2007-2009

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) works hard to provide the best education possible for your children. Throw away the image of mommies selling frosted cupcakes to raise funds for the school’s pep squad. Members of a local PTA are the real heroes behind our school systems.

National PTA President Jan Harp Domene spoke with OC Family about the organization:

[1.] What is the main role of the PTA?
We’re the watchdog for children. We’re here to make all children’s potential a reality for them – that’s our vision.

[2.] How has the PTA changed since you first became involved?
There has been a lot of change in the makeup of the PTA. We’re seeing a lot more fathers in leadership positions…knowing that it takes entire families to raise a child.

[3.] Is membership up or down?
Down. I want to send a clear message to parents across this nation that this is an important issue. (Membership is) the life and blood of the PTA, which keeps us strong.

[4.] How is the PTA in Orange County?
I’m so proud to live in this county, the largest PTA district in the world. There are 155,000 PTA members in OC. The average membership costs $6 a year. That’s a super- sized meal at McDonalds, which no one needs.

[5.] What are some top concerns in education being addressed at the national level?
We’re fighting child obesity; trying to get kids off the couch; keeping physical education in our schools; we’re trying to keep arts education in our schools; Internet safety and children’s safety all around.

[6.] Are there unique challenges in California?
You ride this rollercoaster of overcrowding in schools and declining enrollment. OC is a vast area that attracts many workers seasonally. What comes along with that is children.

[7.] Any myths or misconceptions about the PTA that you frequently encounter?
That the PTA is only for white wealthy women who have nothing else to do during their day. We are men, women and students of all different cultures, race and backgrounds coming together for kids. Fifty percent of my national board is men. We’re not a fundraising organization. That’s not our purpose. But when funding gets ripped out of schools, I’ve seen the PTA fundraise to reinstate those things that are important for their child’s education. We’re not about cookies and punch anymore.

[8.] What’s the most effective way parents can help their child be a successful student?
No. 1: Get involved. Get on the campus. Never allow a stranger to educate your child. Get in there. Ask questions. Stay connected. You have to know what’s happening.

[9.] What motivates you to keep giving to this organization?
I’m there for children. I’m not going to benefit financially. I see the power of this organization; I see the benefits of this organization; and I see that we do make a difference.

[10.] What changes has PTA made?
Without the PTA, there’s no free and reduced lunch program. The bicycle helmet law, the children restraint seats – PTA, and the March of Dimes started as the Mothers March of PTA. A lot of child labor laws were written by the PTA. The polio vaccine was driven by the PTA. So many things we take for granted.

[11.] What are your 3 main goals as president?
My goal is to make parents understand the power in their membership and getting them connected to resources they need to have their child succeed. I need to ensure that children are healthy and safe. Fighting childhood obesity, getting recess back into schools, and bringing drug and prevention programs back.
