 Then in the summer between second and third grade I went to sleepover camp for a week. This was definitely a YMCA camp. I remember Camp Lackey in Idyllwild vividly, though I was only 8. I imagine I’ll recall much of that experience for the rest of my life. Making key chains out of vinyl-coated thread, archery, hiking, swimming, mess hall, s’mores and songs around the campfire are all part of the many memories. As a member of Camp Fire for three years, I had many other “camp” experiences with our retreats, trips and activities. Just thinking about it makes me a little wistful; my nephews never really had a camp experience during their summers that I recall. While preparing our annual Camp Issue, which hits stands on Thursday, I was gratified to see how many incredible, diverse programs are offered in Orange County and the Inland Empire and how innovative and affordable they seem. There are theater arts camps and military training camps, American Girl and baseball, sports, fine arts, all-around – so many that seemed amazing and so much fun. I began to wish I was a kid again (something I don’t very often do). To find out about all the options out there, have a great time and have a chance to win great prizes, come to the 2010 OC Family Summer Camp & Activities Fair on March 27 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Pretend City Children’s Museum in Irvine. Explore all the options for summer fun and the range of incredible camp possibilities available, including sports, music and art, educational, all-around, overnight and day camps. Admission is $10 and the first 500 attendees will receive a goodie bag worth $50.
