BALLET FOR BOYS WITH RICHARD GLASSTONE (Not rated; June 26; ages 7-14): Boys too embarrassed to take a real ballet class, or even those with more confidence, will get the pointe with this instructional DVD that presents the basic building blocks of ballet in a clear and fun way. The instructor, Richard Glasstone, taught many of Britain’s most accomplished male dancers during 17 years at the Royal Ballet School. Grade A- HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL:THE CONCERT (G; June 26; ages 7-12): The concert tour that capitalized on the phenomenonal Disney Channel movie couldn’t help but be a hit last year with the teeny-bopper set. Except for my critical youngest son, a definite chip off the old block, the easily entertained audience was too busy screaming to notice how poorly produced the 75-minute concert was. Grade C THE ORIGINAL NANCY DREW MYSTERY MOVIE COLLECTION (G; June 12; ages 9-14): Capitalizing on the feature film’s release of the same week, Warner Bros. brings to DVD for the first time these four films of 1938 and 1939 starring Bonita Granville as the teenaged detective. Grade: A SESAME STREET: KIDS FAVORITE COUNTRY SONGS (Not rated; June 5; ages 2-6): Tumbleweeds, hay and a whole lot of country music legends grace Sesame Street in this hour-long compilation featuring Elmo and his rootin’ tootin’ cuz Elmer. Among the Muppets’ special guests are the Dixie Chicks, Faith Hill, Garth Brooks, Lee Ann Womack and the late Johnny Cash. Definitely a DVD the whole family can tap toes to. Grade: A- |
