Product or service: Licensed childcare in Gonzalo’s home.
How you got the idea: I loved working, but at some point a couple of years ago my children were unhappy and their childcare wasn’t that great. I quit my job to be with them and sort of fell into childcare.
What did it take to launch your business? With our childcare, we needed to go through licensing; be fingerprinted and TB tested; be CPR/First Aid and Health and Safety certified; and have an in-home inspection.
What is the size of your business? I have nine children who all come at different times and on different days. (Eight is our maximum number). My husband helps me a lot in the afternoon, when he gets home from work.
What are your plans for the business? We’re in the process of applying for a “large” license, which would allow for 14 children.
Are you able to work around your children’s schedules? Yes, I’m involved with my 3rd- grader’s PTA, my church and coaching different sports my 3-year-old plays.
Did you have a career before you became a mother? I did telecommunications in the Army before having my first child, and then I worked for the Housing Authority before I left to stay home with my kids.
Do you have a business role model? Yes, every woman I meet who is doing the same thing I do: working and being a mom in the best way they can.
