Moms, when's the last time you "borrowed" your kid's A&D ointment and used it as "lip gloss", or used a baby wipe to remove makeup from your face? For all us busy moms, we know how frustrating it can be to find the right makeup that will not only last, but be affordable and make us look amazing with little effort!

Being a fierce makeup aficionado, I have experimented with every makeup brand imaginable: MAC, Lancome, L'Oreal, Maybelline, CoverGirl, Revlon, NARS, Smashbox, Laura Mercier, you name it. Coming in at a close second are Smashbox's Primer which glides on like buttah! and serves as a great base for makeup. Nars' Foundation glides on smooth, and oil free, which=no breakouts! The Skinny Jeans in All of Us

Skinnyjeans.

The word conjures up many images. For some women, it conjures up the image of a thinner-than-life woman with toned legs, a flat tummy (thanks in part to a thus far child-less existence), and heels most moms wouldn’t dare wear to a playdate, the grocery store, or the nearest MyGym, places most likely to be frequented by moms. For some moms, it’s something of the past, a passionate love left behind, replaced by a marriage to comfy khakis and Gloria Vanderbilt jeans (yes, I believe they still make those).

For others it brings to mind thoughts of trend, style, youth, and a vitality that almost all women at some level or another strive for. It stands for glamour, poise, and a knack for the effortlessly chic. Images of “real” celeb moms like Victoria Beckham, Nicole Richie, and Demi Moore come to mind, and along with it thoughts of how if I had a trainer, nanny, and personal chef wouldn’t I look the same, but heck, it's still fun to fantasize isn't it?

When I became a new mom (am I still considered as such as my son is 18- going–on- 19 months old now?) I quickly sank into a fit of postpartum depression as I felt trapped by this new persona I thought I had to take on. I believed that being a mom meant I had to give up all my loves: my love of independence, my love of fashion and looking stylish, my love of spontaneity, fitness, and my dreams of becoming a magazine columnist in exchange for wipies, burp cloths, strollers, coupons, Desitin, and breast pumps. Not that I didn’t or don’t love my child. Any mom will tell you that they live for their child, and love takes on a new level once you have one. I was sad because I thought that when you become a mom you as a person cease to exist and you take on the role of “mom” only, apron-wearing/ cookie- baking/SUV- driving self and all. I felt as if my own needs, desires, guilty pleasures and the things that made me me were going to be shelved as I now had to give unto the needs of another 24/7.

Eventually I got over this depression once I realized that being a mother is simply one facet of the complicated yet amazing maze that makes me me. I am a mother, I take great pride in this, but this only makes me a better woman. At the end of the day when the kiddo is off to bed and the husband is sound asleep I’m still me, with my own thoughts, dreams, and goals, and I should never cease to be myself no matter what new role I take on.

Thus skinnyjeansmom came about. I became frustrated with trying to find a column/blog where my loves of fashion, lifestyle, fitness, and just being a mom came together. I love reading family/parenting magazines as I embrace that side of me fully now, but I also embrace the side of me that yearns to read about what the “Best Jeans For Your Butt!” are in a major fashion magazine.

And so skinnyjeansmom came to be. I am a mom, a wife, I understand budget and time constraints when it comes to style, fashion, fitness, and lifestyle. But I also believe a mom can be beautiful, stylish, fit, intelligent, opinionated, and be her own person while still fully embracing the joy that is motherhood. Skinnyjeans is not about being a size 2 and wearing 4 inch heels to Costco and living up to an impractical ideal (unless you want to!); it’s about the fact that every mom should celebrate being a woman, embrace the power that comes from motherhood and femininity, and embrace who she is as a person.
